Directors and Members ESCCAP consists of experts in the field of parasitology and public health from across Europe. There are five Directors. There are also eleven Members selected on the basis of their expertise and their ablility to represent a country or region of Europe. Each Member is responsible for promoting ESCCAP and its objectives in his or her own region and National Association. New Members are identified and nominated by the National Associations and are invited to join the group. Gained a PhD in 1973 and appointed to a lectureship in the Veterinary Faculty in 1976. Awarded a Personal Professorship in Veterinary Parasitology in 1987. During academic career acted as a Consultant to a number of International Organisations and served on the Executive Committees of National and International Veterinary Associations. Awarded Honorary Membership of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology in 2001 and of the European Veterinary Parasitology College in 2003. Acted as a Trustee of the International Donkey Protection Trust from 1992-2002 and, through personal contacts at the Veterinary Faculty of Addis Ababa University, had a special interest in the welfare of working donkeys in Ethiopia. Honored by Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2004 on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Veterinary Faculty for services to veterinary education and animal welfare. Moved from family farm in Scotland in 2003 and now lives in the warmer climes of SW France. Invited to act as Chairman of ESCCAP in 2008.
| | | Anja Joachim - ESCCAP Treasurer and Member for ESCCAP Austria Anja Joachim graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, in 1992. After postgraduate studies in Sydney, Australia, and Copenhagen, Denmark, she became Lecturer for Parasitology at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Leipzig, Germany, in 2001. In 2003 she was appointed as Professor of Parasitology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Austria). Her main research focuses on host-parasite interactions in porcine isosporosis and nematode infections. Amongst others, she is on the Board of the Austrian Society of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology and the European Veterinary Parasitology College and a member of the German Society of Parasitology, the German Veterinary Society and the World Association for the advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP), and she is on the Advisory Board of the Karl-Enigk-Foundation (Germany). | | Thomas Schnieder - Member for ESCCAP GermanyThomas Schnieder graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover in 1981. He worked as a lecturer in parasitology in the Institute for Parasitology until 1984. He subsequently joined the pharmaceutical industry for two years before coming back to the Institute for Parasitology in Hannover. From 1989 to 1990 he worked as a visiting guest scientist at the Parasitology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Melbourne, Australia. In 2000 he became Professor in Parasitology and Director of the Institute for Parasitology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. His main research focuses on molecular helminthology, epidemiology, diagnostic and control of helminith infections. He is on the editorial board of several international parasitological textbooks, among others he is the head of the German Veterinary Association (DVG), president of the German Society for Parasitology (DGP), board member of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) and founding member of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC). | | Claudio Genchi - Member for ESCCAP ItalyClaudio Genchi is currently full Professor of Parasitic Diseases at the University of Milano (Italy) and Vice-Director of the Department of Animal Pathology. He is a Founding Member and Vice-President of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC), President of the Italian Society of Parasitology (SoIPa), Honorary Member of American Heartworm Society and member of the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasite. Primary research areas are the molecular approach to the biology, genetics, immunology and pathogenesis of parasitic diseases, including vector-borne infections (filarial and tick-borne diseases). He is co-author of over 250 papers published in international, peer-reviewed journals, most of which deal with filarial infections (Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens) in dogs and cats, and in human beings. He is leader of one of the important research teams involved in the study of Wolbachia, the bacterial endosymbiont of filarial nematodes. His team first identified these bacteria by molecular studies in D. immitis in 1995. These studies are currently supported by the Italian Research Ministry and by EU funds (specific goals of the projects: production of a 2D-PAGE map of the proteins of Wolbachia). Professor Genchi has been an invited speaker at more than 50 International Conferences and Symposia; Chair Person of three International Conferences (VII European Multicolloquium of Parasitology, Parma, September 2nd-6th 1996, Workshop on Wildlife Diseases, Trento, July13th-16th, 1998 and 18th International Conference of World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, Stresa 26-30 August, 2001) and of the 12th National Congress of Italian Society of Parasitology (Como-Bormio, 28th June-2nd July 1983).

| Frans van Knapen - Member for ESCCAP Benelux Countries Frans van Knapen received his master degree in veterinary science in 1971 followed by the diploma of doctor in veterinary medicine in January 1973. He worked in veterinary surgery for almost two years as a private practitioner. Following this he obtained a position at the National Institute of Public Health (RIVM, Bilthoven, The Netherlands) in the Laboratory for Pathology as a parasitologist. From 1974 onwards he was head of the Parasitology Section, a reference centre for medical and veterinary parasitology (zoonoses). The main subjects of research in that Section were trichinellosis and toxoplasmosis. Between 1980-1984 the Parasitology Section was incorporated in the Laboratory for Zoonoses and Food Microbiology. From 1984 onwards a separate Laboratory for Parasitology and Mycology was started. Frans van Knapen was in charge of this Laboratory. In May 1984 he obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Medical Faculty of the University of Amsterdam. His thesis was entitled: "Immunodiagnosis of Toxoplasmosis".In May 1993 he held a part-time position at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Utrecht as Professor in the Epidemiology of Parasitic Zoonoses. Since 1st March 1995 he is a full-time Professor in Food Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health at the Veterinary Faculty in Utrecht.
| | Guadalupe Miró Corrales - Member for ESCCAP Spain Guadalupe Miró qualified from Madrid Veterinary College in 1982. From 1982 to 1986 she worked as general practitioner in a private clinic. Since 1986 she has worked for the Animal Health Department of the Veterinary College of Madrid (Universidad Complutense) where she completed her PhD thesis in 1990. Since 1991 she has held a permanent position as Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases in the same Department. She is also in charge of the Consultantancy of Infectious diseases at the Veterinary teaching Hospital focusing on parasitic diseases of small animals. Her areas of research are the epidemiology and control of zoonotic diseases, focusing mainly on canine vector borne disease (Leishmaniosis), intestinal parasitoses (Toxoplasmosis) and soil contamination in urban and rural areas (Toxocariosis). Currently she is involved in different clinical and epidemiological studies on canine leishmaniosis and toxoplasmosis in cats. She is member of the Spanish Society of Parasitology (SEP) and of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) and a diplomate of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC) and a founding member of ESCCAP. As well as this she is also member of different Spanish Associations of Veterinary Practitioners (AVEPA and AMVAC).
| | Jacques Guillot - Member for ESCCAP France Jacques Guillot graduated from the Alfort School of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, and graduated in medical mycology in 1993 from the Pasteur Institute of Paris From 1993 he was a doctor in veterinary medicine involved in an experimental survey into the prevalence of Malasezzia yeasts in pet carnivores. From 1991-1996 he was an assistant in parasitology at the Alfort School of Veterinary Medicine, he completed his PhD thesis in1995 and has been a member of the EVPC since 2004. Jacques has been a professor of parasitology since 2002. His areas of research specialisation are the diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections in animals, the epidemiology of pneumocystosis and aspergillosis and the phylogeny of fungal pathogens and parasite species. He is the author of 61 publications and 101 communications in international meetings, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of Veterinary Dermatology since 2001 and a Scientific Director at the Alfort School of Veterinary Medicine since 2003.
| | Maggie Fisher - Secretary and Member for ESCCAP UK Maggie qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1986 and after a short time in practice she returned to the RVC, at first as an intern and later a lecturer in parasitology. Beginning in 1997 she has developed a consultancy in veterinary parasitology, committed to bringing effective communication, leadership and inspiration to projects. She is an active board member of the WAAVP (World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology) and a diplomate of the European Veterinary Parasitology College, and a founding member of ESCCAP. She is also a member of the Association of Veterinary Consultants.
| | Peter Deplazes - Member for ESCCAP Switzerland Peter Deplazes is full Professor and Director of the Institute of Parasitology of the Vetsuisse- and Medical Faculty, University of Zurich (Switzerland). He graduated from the University of Zurich in 1984 where he also performed his doctoral thesis. From 1988 to 1990 he was assistant and 1992 he became head of the laboratory for Zoonoses at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Zurich. In 1991, he was a guest scientist at the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Animal Disease, School of Veterinary Studies, Murdoch (Western Australia). His main research focuses on the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis and control of zoonotic parasites, such as Echinococcus, Taenia and Toxocara, and on opportunistic parasites in immune-deficient patients. He is a founding member of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC) and of ESCCAP and he is member of several professional organizations as well as several advisory boards of a number of foundations aiming to improve veterinary parasitology. He is co-author of more than 180 peer-reviewed papers and was invited speaker at many conferences and symposiums. | | Stig Milan Thamsborg - Member for ESCCAP Nordic CountriesStig Milan Thamsborg holds a MSc and a PhD in Veterinary Science from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, Denmark. Stig is 49 years of age, married and living in Copenhagen. During the first 14 years of his career, besides working as general practitioner, Stig was also involved in teaching and research in large animal clinical studies with a strong focus on clinical parasitology and animal health under extensive production conditions, including extensive work in developing countries. From 1997 to 2002 he held an endowed research professorship in Organic Livestock Production and Health during a phase of very rapid expansion of organic farming in Denmark. Currently, he holds the position of Professor of Veterinary Parasitology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen and is the director of the Danish Centre for Experimental Parasitology, involved in applied and experimental studies on parasites of companion animals and livestock. A recent research area of focus is French heartworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) infection in dogs using foxes as a model and zoonotic helminths. He is the author of over 150 research articles and the author or editor of several books, mostly in the area of veterinary parasitology and animal health and production. | | | Luis Manuel Madeira de Carvalho - Member for ESCCAP Portugal Luis Manuel Madeira de Carvalho graduated in 1987 in Veterinary Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Technical University of Lisbon (FVM/TUL), Portugal. He was selected as a Training Assistant of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of the FVM/TUL in 1987, then Assistant Lecturer in 1991 and Assistant Professor in 2002, after completing a PhD on Horse Strongyles. Nowadays he is an Associate Professor at the Animal Health Department, FVM/TUL, teaching General Parasitology, Helminthology, Parasitic Diseases and Wildlife Diseases. He is a researcher of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Animal Health (CIISA/FVM/TUL) since 1992 and Luis has developed research on companion animal parasites and parasitic diseases, small animal parasitic zoonosis, horse parasites, ruminant gastrointestinal parasites and wildlife diseases. Luis did Small Animal Practice at the Hospital of the FVM/TUL from 1987 till 1999 and performs routine analysis at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases since 1987. He is a founding member and belongs to the Board of the Portuguese Society of Parasitology (since 1991) and a founding member and President of the General Assembly of the National Observatorium on Leishmaniosis (since 2008). Luis is Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Hydatid Disease (since 2010) and a Member of the Portuguese College of Veterinary Surgeons (since 1993). | | | Jakub Gawor - Member for ESCCAP PolandJakub Gawor is head of the Laboratory of Parasitoses of Domestic Animals in the Institute of Parasitology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. He graduated in 1983 from the Veterinary Faculty of the Agricultural University in Warsaw and completed his PhD in “Occurrence and control of internal parasites in working horses in different breeding systems” in 1993. His specific scientific interests are in diagnostic, prophylaxis and control of parasitic diseases of small and farm animals and also parasitic zoonoses particularly toxocariasis and alveococcosis. He is a co-author of several recent papers which have included investigations into Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxocara spp. and the epidemiological evaluation of risk factors for toxocariasis in children. |
