ESCCAP Member PortugalLuis Manuel Madeira de Carvalho graduated in 1987 in Veterinary Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Technical University of Lisbon (FVM/TUL), Portugal. He was selected as a Training Assistant of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of the FVM/TUL in 1987, then Assistant Lecturer in 1991 and Assistant Professor in 2002, after completing a PhD on Horse Strongyles. Nowadays he is an Associate Professor at the Animal Health Department, FVM/TUL, teaching General Parasitology, Helminthology, Parasitic Diseases and Wildlife Diseases. He is a researcher of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Animal Health (CIISA/FVM/TUL) since 1992 and Luis has developed research on companion animal parasites and parasitic diseases, small animal parasitic zoonosis, horse parasites, ruminant gastrointestinal parasites and wildlife diseases.

Luis did Small Animal Practice at the Hospital of the FVM/TUL from 1987 till 1999 and performs routine analysis at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases since 1987. He is a founding member and belongs to the Board of the Portuguese Society of Parasitology (since 1991) and a founding member and President of the General Assembly of the National Observatorium on Leishmaniosis (since 2008). Luis is Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Hydatid Disease (since 2010) and a Member of the Portuguese College of Veterinary Surgeons (since 1993).
