Professor Caroline Frey is Co-Director of the Institute of Parasitology at the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Switzerland.

She graduated in veterinary medicine from the University of Bern in 2002. In 2003, she worked as a practicing veterinarian in companion animal medicine before beginning her doctoral studies at the University of Bern, which she completed in 2006. She then joined the Institute of Parasitology in Bern, first as an assistant and later as a senior assistant.

During this period, in 2009, Professor Frey obtained the Swiss specialist title in Parasitology in Laboratory Medicine and became a board-certified Diplomate of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (Dipl. EVPC) in 2011.

From April 2012 to July 2013, she was a Swiss National Science Foundation-funded research fellow with the Saluvet group at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. In 2014, she completed her habilitation, entitled “Important veterinary parasitoses: development of diagnostic tests and their application in epidemiological studies in Switzerland.”

From May 2017 to June 2019, Professor Frey worked as a research scientist at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Centre for Food-borne and Animal Parasitology in Saskatoon, Canada. During this time, she was also appointed Adjunct Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), University of Saskatchewan, a position she continues to hold.

In August 2019, she was appointed Extraordinary Professor and Co-Director of the Institute of Parasitology at the University of Bern.

Professor Frey is a member of several professional organisations and serves on the editorial boards of Veterinary Parasitology and Food and Waterborne Parasitology. Since 2011, she has served as a Presidential Member of the Swiss section of the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP), and was elected President in 2026.

Her primary research interests focus on zoonotic parasites and veterinary public health. Her broader research covers various aspects of parasitic infections across multiple animal species, with the overall aim of improving animal health and welfare while supporting sustainable animal production.

Professor Frey is the co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences and symposia.
