Born on 21st March 1964, Luís earned all his degrees from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon (FMV-ULisboa). He graduated in veterinary medicine in 1987, earned the equivalent to an MSc in 1991, completed his PhD in veterinary sciences (parasitology and parasitic diseases) in 2002 and achieved habilitation in animal health in 2008.

He began his career in 1987, teaching and conducting research in veterinary parasitology and parasitic diseases. Since 2022, he has been a Full Professor of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases for the Integrated Master of Veterinary Medicine (MIMV) at FMV-ULisboa and has presided over its Pedagogical Council since 2018.

His extensive research contributions include 220 scientific publications and coordination or collaboration on over 30 research projects focused on the parasitology of domestic animals and wildlife. He has supervised eight PhD theses, 140 master’s dissertations, 20 internship and BSc reports and 20 trainings at the Parasitology and Parasitological Diseases Laboratory (PPDL) at FMV-ULisboa.

Beyond academia, he practiced small animal medicine at the FMV-ULisboa teaching hospital from 1987 to 1999. Since 1987, he has also been a vital member of clinical and laboratory staff at the PPDL.

His primary areas of interest in teaching and research are the parasitology and parasitic diseases of domestic animals, exotic pets and wildlife. He also actively explores parasitic zoonoses and vector-borne diseases in companion animals interconnected with wildlife diseases, ecosystem health and conservation medicine.

Luís is a founding member and board member of the Portuguese Society of Parasitology (since 1991), and a founding member and President of the General Assembly of the National Observatory on Leishmaniosis (since 2008). He has served as Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Hydatid Disease since 2010 and has been a Member of the Portuguese College of Veterinary Surgeons since 1993.
