ESCCAP Publishes 7th Edition of Guideline 01: Worm Control in Dogs and Cats

ESCCAP proudly announces the publication of the seventh edition of its leading guideline: Worm Control in Dogs and Cats.  This essential update provides veterinary professionals across Europe with the latest evidence-based recommendations for controlling both intestinal and non-intestinal helminths in companion animals.

Originally published in 2006, Guideline 01 remains ESCCAP’s most widely used resource.  It offers a comprehensive overview of the key worm species affecting dogs and cats in Europe and outlines effective control measures to protect both animal and human health.

The updated guideline addresses emerging parasitic threats, emphasises the importance of tailored, risk-based parasite control plans and highlights the zoonotic risks associated with certain infections.  It adopts a holistic approach, incorporating prevention, diagnostic tests and treatment strategies.  Detailed protocols are provided based on an animal’s age, health, lifestyle and risk factors, including travel and diet.  Veterinary professionals are encouraged to download the guideline and apply its recommendations in clinical practice and client education.

Key changes in the seventh edition include:

  • New schemes for deworming dogs and cats
  • Inclusion of Toxascaris leonina in the roundworm chapter
  • Completely rewritten sections on D. immitis and D. repens
  • New sections on lungworms and a new Aelurostrongylus abstrusus life cycle
  • New section on threadworm
  • Updated reference tables
  • Expanded guidance on the risks associated with feeding raw meat
