World Parasite Awareness Day 2026

World Parasite Awareness Day 2026

Did you know that World Parasite Awareness Day is held on March 20th each year?  It marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when parasite risk begins to rise for pets in many areas.

To celebrate World Parasite Awareness Day 2025, ESCCAP signed a global Prevention Pledge alongside more than 35 veterinary associations, parasitology organisations and animal health groups from around the world.

The Prevention Pledge affirms our shared recognition that parasites pose a serious but often invisible risk to pets.  Fleas, ticks, worms and other parasites can cause discomfort, serious illness and, in some cases, life-threatening disease.  Some parasites, and the infections they carry, can also spread to people, putting entire households at risk.

As the pledge states: “Parasite infections and infestations can lead to pain, suffering and, in some cases, death, and the value of prevention is well documented.  Preventing infections before they occur helps reduce these harms and limits the potential for parasites to spread more widely within households and communities.”

The pledge also highlights the role of veterinarians as essential partners in parasite prevention.  Veterinarians understand the threats present in their local area and can help pet owners choose prevention approaches suited to their pet’s needs and circumstances.

Parasite prevention strengthens the bond between pets and their owners by helping animals live healthier, safer lives.  In honour of World Parasite Awareness Day 2026, we invite organisations and individuals around the world to stand with us in support.
